Genetic Testing Confirmed...

Cheryl's blood test confirmed DPD Deficiency.

So, just like that, no testing, no awareness, she started chemo and it was over as soon as it began. She was aware of the side effects of the treatments and was prepared to deal with those.

I got word from her doctor about twenty minutes ago.

The emptiness and anger I have felt since last Friday now has a focus. Some way, the future for me and the only way I can make sense out of us losing her is to try and change the system to make testing common place.

Hello Rick....You and Sean...and yes, Cheryl..are constantly on my mind. I have been so angry too. I agree with you that testing and screening for such deficiency should be common place. I commend you for taking on the challenge to make a difference...to make a change...I know Cheryl would be proud of you and is smiling down on you..because she knows if anyone can do this...you can! I am here to help you in any way I can..just let me know. I know a lot of doctors here and given that this is a teaching hospital...I have a lot of resources here...just let me know what I can do....

Rick,
I tried to email you through your dpd-deficiency website this week. The email bounced back. Would you check on it. My mother passed away 2/9/09 after a near identical experience as you describe for Cheryl and your family.
With sympathy and gratitude for your efforts,
Jim
